Step-by-Step Guide on How to Perform Umrah

There are four essential rites of Umrah:

  1. Ihram
  2. Tawaf
  3. Sa’y
  4. Qasar/Halaq

1. Ihram

The pilgrim sets their Niyyah (intention) for Umrah and recites the Talbiya at the designated Miqat.

Steps for Ihram:

  • Perform Ghusal (a ritual bath) with the intention of Ihram.
  • Wear the Ihram garments.
  • Offer two Rakats of Nafal prayer, covering your head.
  • Uncover your head and declare your intention (Niyyah) saying:
“اللهم إني أريد العمرة فيسرها لي وتقبلها مني”
(\"O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah. Please make it easy for me and accept it from me.\")
  • Upon leaving home, begin reciting the following Dua and Talbiya continuously. It’s important to recite the Talbiya aloud at least once:
    “بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، لاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللَّهِ”
(\"In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.\")
  • Upon entering Masjid al-Haram, recite Darud e Sharif and supplicate to Allah as you move towards the Kaaba:
“اللهم صل على محمد وسلم، اللهم افتح لي أبواب رحمتك”
(\"O Allah! Exalt the mention of Your Messenger. O Allah! Open the gates of Your mercy for me.\")
  • Keep your eyes fixed on Baitullah and recite:
“الله أكبر الله أكبر، لا إله إلا الله، الله أكبر الله أكبر، ولله الحمد”
(\"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and to Him belongs all praise.\")
  • After this, recite the Talbiya and proceed to perform Tawaf.

Prohibitions of Ihram:

  • Cutting nails
  • Shaving or removing any hair from the body
  • Using any scented products on the body or Ihram
  • Wearing stitched clothing
  • Wearing sandals or flip-flops that cover the ankles
  • Covering the face or head
  • Hunting animals, including lice
  • Engaging in sexual activity

2. Tawaf

Tawaf refers to walking around the Kaaba seven times in a respectful and devoted manner. Keep the Kaaba on your left side during the entire Tawaf. Upon arrival at the Kaaba, stop reciting the Talbiya. Ensure you are in Wudu (ablution) for Tawaf.
Men must leave their right shoulder bare during the first three rounds (this is called Idtiba’a). After completing Tawaf, they should cover both shoulders.

Steps for Tawaf:

  • Begin at the Black Stone. If possible, kiss it; if not, touch it with your right hand; if that\'s not possible, face it and point towards it with your right hand, saying:
    “بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، الله أكبر”
(\"In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest.\")
  • For men, Raml (briskly walk) during the first three rounds, and walk normally during the remaining four rounds.
  • Upon reaching the Yamani Corner, either touch it with your right hand (without kissing) or continue without any gesture. Recite:
    “رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّار”
(\"Our Lord, grant us good in this life and good in the hereafter and save us from the punishment of the Hellfire.\")
  • After completing the seven rounds of Tawaf, proceed to Maqaam-e-Ibrahim (the station of Prophet Ibrahim) and offer two Rakats of Nafal prayer near it, without covering your head.
  • Afterward, drink Zamzam water while standing, saying:
    “بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ عِلْمًا نَافِعًا وَرِزْقًا وَاسِعًا وَشِفَاءً مِن كُلِّ دَاءٍ”
(\"O Allah! I ask You for beneficial knowledge, abundant provision, and a cure from every disease.\")

3. Sa’y

Sa’y involves walking back and forth seven times between the hills of Safaa and Marwa, which are situated on either side of the Kaaba.

Steps for Sa’y:

  • As you leave the Masjid boundary, say:
    “بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَالصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ”
(\"In the name of Allah, and prayers and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your favor.\")
  • Upon approaching Mount Safa, recite the following verses from the Quran:
    “إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَآئِرِ اللَّهِ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلاَ جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا”
(\"Verily, As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. So, it is not a sin for him who performs Hajj or Umrah to walk between them.\")
  • At Safaa, face the Qiblah, raise your hands, and recite Takbeer three times:
“الله أكبر، الله أكبر، الله أكبر”
(\"Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest.\")
  • Then, recite:
“لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك وله الحمد، يحيي ويميت وهو على كل شيء قدير”
(\"There is no deity but Allah, alone with no partner, to Him belongs the kingdom and all praise, He gives life and death, and He has power over all things.\")
  • After the seventh trip, end at Marwa and offer two Rakats of Nafal.

4. Qasar / Halaq

After completing the Sa’y, male pilgrims will shave their heads (Halaq), while female pilgrims should cut a small portion of their hair, approximately the length of a fingertip.

With this, all Ihram restrictions are lifted, and the Umrah is complete.

May Allah accept your Umrah. Ameen.
